There were NO Smokey Z's. There were several engines and even more sets of heads and intakes that were built by Chevrolet and sent to Smokey for evaluation but no cars were ever built. There was a auction at Smokeys a few years back and the engines got sold. The silver one in the magazine was just a Z28 that Reggie Jackson put one of the engines in. All the lettering on the car and headrests has been added lately by the current owner. The cars are nothing more than neat engine stands. Mine was built by Dave Tinell for Carl Dwiggins with another engine from the same auction. Reggie still has a complete engine on a stand. I think Dick Bridges might have also had a engine installed in a car.

Yes I know and agree that there were no Smokey Z's. I was referring to the Yunick auction where the engines were sold and eventually got installed into a few Z's. I have always called them Yunick Z's, even though he didn't do any modifications on the cars, just own the engines at one time.
I am aware of Jackson installing the Hemi into Gary's car. It's a shame that Yunick never got around or was interested in installing the Hemis into the Z's himself.

------Al Maynard also had a silver 69 Z/28 with one of the Yunick engines. I saw the engine out of the car and then installed in the car at a later date. Dont know the configuration of the rest of the car, 4-wheel disc, etc. I havent thought about that car for quite awhile, and am unsure where it resides today.........Bill S

I'd guess that's the same as this car (see attached). What are the details on Al's car? 427 powered?

Thanks, Joe. Hey Charley, does the pace car's protect-o-plate show signs of being glued into a booklet at one time or has it always been loose like that?

Yes it was glued to something and then torn out. Al Young did not think it had a protecto plate when I asked him about it but I found it in the glove box.

Hey Charley,
Do you know that your Pace Car might be the 1st production 375hp Camaro? If I am not mistaken, Grumpy's '67 is 195XXX, and his was supposed to be the 1st. Maybe Kim can confirm this, as I forgot to write down the vin on the car at Kansas City last spring, but I thought it was 195xxx. |
