I heard this very same story from Ray Allen a few years ago. He also told me the Mopar camp held there own "Mini Nationals" prior to Indy just to make sure only the top Mopars dominated at the Nationals. Geoff Stunkard wrote a great article in Mopar Performance magazine on this topic a few years ago. He interviewed Jack Werst for the story. Check out my Ray Allen Tribute webpages by clicking on my profile. Maybe Belair can post a direct link?

Incredible story and history. What a sight it would be to pair these two up against each other once again.

[/ QUOTE ]The new owner of that Superbird attempted to make this happen but I'm not sure if Ray Allen was able to have his car ready for Indy last week. I was contacted by Geoff Stunkard (who knows the owner of that Bird) a few weeks ago and gave him some contact info for Ray. Don't know if he got through to him or not. Maybe someday these two cars will meet for an exibition race? Sure would be cool!

That's what I hear. Maybe that's why it didn't happen? Maybe some day people will see the history making race versions of these cars are sometime's more valuable than stock numbers matching trailer queens.

The Superbird is now on ebay. Up to $250,000 already. What's it going to take to win this car?

Why is that people do this to historical cars . The '66 Hemi Plymouth that beat Jenkins was initially restored to stock. Someone bought it from the guy who restored it and put it back to the way it should of been. The Gyspy T/A Challenger was literally days away from losing its' heritage until the stops was put on restoring it. The new owner didn't realize that it was worth so much more in it's unrestored condition. Here in the very near future I'm going to see the collection owned by Don Fezzel and looking at those old Stock and Super Stock cars wouldn't be the same if they were restored to stock. Can you imagine Strickler's Old Reliable without all the lettering?

Ditto for Ford. All the factory backed Ford racers took there cars to the Indy dealership for engine "updates", trans and rearend changes. Ford also had their own "mini nationals" at a nearby dragstrip and the factory brass decided what big name driver got what car, who would run who if possible, and who would "red light" if they had enough points to get into the eliminator race, even though they hadnt won their class. Lots of sneaky stuff going on in all the S/S race camps.
