I thought that the point of the ZL2 hood was to accomadate the higher clearance of the 427 with high rise intake, which is why they were standard on all COPO's. I don't recall ever seeing even a dealer swap 427 with the flat hood. Too bad you can't really see the engine call out on the fenders. Doesn't look to me like the 6 cylinder fender that was standard on COPO's.

The ZL2 hood and related air cleaner items was an RPO performance option (standard on Z11's) that was included as part of the 9561/9560 COPO package. The L72 motor required no more hood clearance than an L78 equipped Camaro with an SS hood using the standard open element air cleaner. A true flat hood (I'm pretty sure, recalling the olden days) would also work on either of these installed motors using the open element air cleaner.

The ZL2 was developed to go with the ZL1, hence the RPO #.
Once it became an RPO, it could be ordered on any SS or Z28, after Jan. '69. I know that the 396 came with a flat hood, but since all COPO's came with the ZL2 hood, it would be easy to assume that there was a clearance issue. The car in question has an SS hood, and the question is "Possible COPO?"

Your inquiry was:
[ QUOTE ] I thought that the point of the ZL2 hood was to accomadate the higher clearance of the 427 with high rise intake, which is why they were standard on all COPO's. My answer was: [ QUOTE ] The L72 motor required no more hood clearance than an L78 equipped Camaro with an SS hood using the standard open element air cleaner. There was no physical size/clearance differences between an L78, L72 or (to the best of my knowledge) a ZL1 motor, so the ZL2 hood (IMO) would not be installed to solve any clearance issues. As far as the car being a COPO - it could be possible. You just know there have to be a few more out there hidden away in buildings or surrounded by vegetation. ![]() |

Speculation is like sitting in a rocking chair. you can do it all day and get nowhere. someone needs to just go find the car and look into it!

All I know is, the person who allowed that car to deteriorate to that sad state should be drawn and quartered.
let me guess...they are saving(killing) it "to fix it up one day"....
