Knappy,
Check your cowl tag. IF your car was built after the 2nd week of Nov. '63 (11B) you should actually have 583 heads, not 690s. That's when production switched from the 930 (.520" lift) cam to the 7735 (Z-11) cam. The 583s are identical to the 690s except they have more meat under the valve spring pockets, which allowed them to be machined deeper to accomodate the higher valve lift without coil bind. Do NOT put a Z-ll cam and 690 heads together. And don't try to machine the valve spring perches on the 690s - you'll hit water.

By the way (just my opinion), you're getting into 409s at a time when things are more expensive then they've ever been. Expect to spend $2K for a "decent" set of heads.

Larry sent me a pic of the '64 you bought. Bahama Green........neat!

I kinda hate to upstage him with pic of his car but he has just waited too long to post them. It is a clean old car and one that will make a neat one to bring back. It sure got a lot of lookers after he had already bought it.

I just stopped by to chat with him and his lady and of course to rest my weary bones for a few min and I was inpressed with the old car. I guess I have a soft spot for these old cars as I ran around with a guy that owned one back when they were new and it was dam fast for such a big car.

Here is one more pic of the 409 emblems on the fender.

Larry if I could figure out how to post some pictures I would put some more up. Thanks for posting them I like to get input from others esp. since I do not know alot about these 409 cars.

Verne, The build date is 11E but the build date on the block is T1001QA so is the 690 heads correct or do I use the 583 heads?

Oct. 1st = 690 heads and 930 cam. Also, it's a 400hp, single AFB. (QA suffix). That'll save you some bucks
Since the assembly suffix is still there, the VIN derivitive should be there too! Check it to make sure it's the original engine. If it is, that automatically makes the car worth MORE. How many miles are on the old girl?
Send some more photos to Pantera to post for us to see.
If you have more questions as you go along, just ask. I'll be glad to help if I can.
Post the cowl tag info and I'll let you know how it left the plant.

The partial vin # is on the pad and it matches the title. It only has 54,000 miles. It is pretty good shape. I will get some pictures together and e-mail them to Larry.
