Interesting list. Of course, not really "valid" for comparison purposes. Some have final drives much more suited to the 1/4 mile than others. Why else would the Road Runner with a 440 be quicker than the Hemi Cuda? They obviously weren't all tested under the same conditions, i.e. track, altitude temp. And of course, how many of these magazines had really good shoes to pilot these cars, none of which had traction control. I am sure they were a handful, and the driver is probably one of the biggest variables. Still, fun for discussion purposes. Don't know that I would use this list to establish bragging rights for any of them.
I guess any type of modified car is off limits. C&D did a great comparison between a 68 Z/28 and a 68 Tunnel Port 302 Mustang. Both were modified by the factory tune guys, but could only use "factory available" parts. So, of course the Z had headers, cross ram and TI ignition, but retained the 30/30 cam. Clicked off a 13.77 on the E 70 bias ply tires. Pretty impressive for the day, especially considering it was loaded with PS and custom interior with console. Sam Posey drove the two cars on the track. Outstanding article, and a lot of fun. |

I have a copy of that magazine, and the whole point was to start arguments. The times were taken from test drives, which meant that none of those cars were "factory fresh", they were all tuned beyond that.
It was all about advertising and marketing. Just ask Jim Wangers. BTW, the list was modified in later issues of MCR. Andy

Okay... here's another list I found. It combines the old with the new. Pretty interesting, but again, too many variables. Same rules apply -> "Don't shoot the messenger!" LOL

Currently the fastest production car is the current Nissan Skyline GT-R "Z Style". How fast? 10.06 in the quarter. Cost $170.K.
Sad but true...Even the Europeans are chasing this one. Phil ![]() |
