"Even the best Driver in the World,is at the Mercy of the Worst Driver on the road".

I recenlty witnessed an insane Car accident here.
I was traveling on Il. I-57 at 7Am on a Sunday AM.It was bright & clear with Sunshine.
I was on a Double Southbound lane with a grassy median seperating the two Northbound lanes.
Maybe 5 cars including me were visible in the southbound lanes.
As I looked ahead in the oncoming corner bend,I saw a Moron traveling at me Northbound in the Southbound lanes at around 100MPH.
He was in my left lane,I in the right lane.I was stunned,& tried to warn the cars behind me in both lanes to get out of the way by swirving & flashing my brake lights...no luck.
This Moron, probably still drunk from the night before & going home from a party, most likely thinking he was on a North-South 2 lane road, flew by me and moments later slammed Head on into two cars behind me following eachother in the left lane. All I saw was Cars jump up into the air,& a body fly out of one vehicle along with a dog, from my rear view mirror.
I pulled over to give a statement once the police arrived.
Two people died & one dog,but the Drunk Driver was conscious & cuffed once his bleeding stopped.

I too watched a similar situation one night last year. I was driving my friends Freightliner Cabriolet down a 2 lane south bound highway and 2 lane north bound. This guy at about 1:30am comes out and proceeds south in the north bound lane. Cars were swerving out of his way and I was following next to him blasting the airhorns to get his attention. Finally after about a mile of this he cut through and started down the correct lane. We were heading into town at a high rate of speed. Luckily we passed a Police officer shooting radar. I backed off as the officer proceeded after him. The fellow swerved around 2 cars and spun around 180 degrees hitting a young lady waiting to turn at the intersection. I was so ANGRY that I stopped the truck and ran past the officer to scream at the DRUNK driver. Luckily I knew the officer and he called me off the a$@hole. I wanted to make sure the officer knew of why I was chasing him. The young lady was ONLY shook up, no real damage (Thank God). That was a night I will never forget.

Someone was telling me the other day about one sent to them where a woman was driving a SUV and she hit a Moose. It came through the front windshield narrowly missed the driver seat and the head of the Moose was sticking out the back of the SUV.Luckily she was by herself he said.Said she did not get hurt but had to clean a lot of blood off of her that came from the Moose.Destroyed the SUV.Here in Texas we have a Rod Run every year out of New Braunfels Texas and goe to Terlingua, they ususlly have a policeman escort them on a motorcycle.Well the Deer are bad and many people over the years have hit deer and damaged there cars.Well last year the policeman hit a 10 point buck on his Harley and the horns punctured him and he had to be flown by lifeflight to a Hospital in San Antonio Texas.Another guy we knew had a Radical 32 Ford and he hit a deer at about 50 mph and did $22,000.00 dollars of damage to his 32 Ford. They now have a guy with a Blown Willys that leads the thing and the noise from the blower supposedly scares the deer away!I don't do that run anymore because of the deer.Hell we even had them come up in our camp scrounging for food at night.Between the Deer and Racoons we did not get much to eat!

Check out a book called "Vintage Car Wrecks" by Rusty Herlocher. It will bring back some bad memories for old guys like me. The book has about 60 pages of demolished musclecars, including one 67' Stingray identifiable only by the dash and the steering wheel. People have been doing stupid things for a long time.

Just heard a radio announcer say this the other day. He used to be a State Trooper and he did his own research on head-on crashes on four lane highways. The majority of the time it occurs in the left lane, which would be the slow lane (right lane) for the driver going the wrong way. Drunk drivers usually stay in that lane.
The trooper/announcer always told people to stay in the right lane unless passing because of this reason. One night he was riding in the left lane (fast lane) and decided to take his own advice, moves over to the right lane and moments later here comes a drunk in the left lane.

Here's for staying in the right lane!!

I would like to add to that thought about staying in the right lane. I have been a SCCA licensed driver and also have instructed a few drivers schools. I took a Skip Barber racing school when I was first trying to learn to go fast in the corners. I learned one really good thing from that experience and that was to "Drive the Horrison". Never drive only fixated on the car directely in front of you. This means to look as far ahead of you as the pavement allows even to follow the road to where it meets the sky at times. (On hills)
Watch the lead car or truck in a collum you are following.

Beleive it or not this pays off even on the street and especially at night. This will accomplish two things. It will give you a huge edge if the car in front of you should suddenly brake to make a turn. You will instantely notice something happening even though you are paying more attention to the lead car. Any car in the line that does something out of the ordinary you will see it and more importantely you will have the maximum time to take evasive action.

Accidents can happen so fast and easy when you least expexct it. I remember years ago I had a guy come clear across a 4 lane street toward me one night and he totaled my black 72 SJ GP because he would not let off the gas and was showing off doing burnouts in his 70 Nova and went left of center clear to catch me over on the right hand lane coming toward him. He hit me so hard it stopped me dead in my tracks. The rear wheel skid marks from my front tires didn't get past the back tires. I was running 35 at the time thank goodness.

Be carefull out there guys.
