Did you use the XP computer(Laptop) to establish your network connection? (i.e. control panel/Network and Internet Connections/Set up or change your home or small office network)
When networking XP to any other windows iteration, it's preferable to use XP's networking wizard which can be found by going to the above location. Just follow the prompts and it'll create a floppy disk that you'll have to load into your 98SE computer.

No, I'm using 98SE as my "hub"...that's whats on my desktop. To use XP I'd have to plug up my laptop, which defeats the whole purpose of going wireless!

I'm not talking about using it as your hub. Xp is just better with the network wizard, to establish the connection between the computers. It's always best to start with the XP computer, even if it's not going to be the hub. It just works better. Try using the network wizard that comes with XP and follow all of the prompts. It will ask which computer you want to use for your hub...and if I remember right, it actually comes up with a diagram.

Didn't Windows 98 Second Edition have an "Internet Connection Sharing" protocol or service that you have to install via the Control Panel's Network panel? That may explain why you can link to the desktop but not share the outgoing connection to the Net.

I don't know about 98 having a connection sharing feature but here's what has to happen. The box with the modem has to be set up as a proxy server and then the other pc via the wireless network needs to be set up to use the proxy for internet access. Check out download.com for a utility to make this happen, there should be several freeware products available. It's been years since I did a proxy connection sharing a dial-up but they worked ok... You'll be able to surf (slowly) but only one can download at a time. With dsl and broadband being so inexpensive these days you must be in an area just out of the loop for DSL.

Now I'm following ya, xplant. The networking setup actually went pretty smooth on both machines, except for the internet part.

Your theory sounds possible, Denis...I know on the 98SE machine I had to put in the CD and install something, but I didn't see "what". It's gotta be a simply little hangup like that, as everything else is working, the laptop has an excellent signal, but no internet...
