I do not know who built the car but by reading what the seller at Mecum wrote it had to be a clone. There was nothing saying the car was real everything was saying correct this and correct that. Somewhere he would of said it was a real car with correct parts. It was written to confuse somebody who doesnt know how to read into it. If it was real shame on the seller because that car could have brought 200k if it was represented as a real car.

I emailed the seller about the car last night. I asked him if there were any documentation and why a restoration of that caliber would have aftermarket parts. I also asked him if the engine that was removed and set aside was still available. Here is his response.
James

It is an un-documented LS6, we have ownership history that confirms it is, but we have no build sheet or protecto-plate to validate the car. Our description states that the original engine was pulled and set aside many years ago when the car was raced (per ownership history) but we do not have the original block for the car. The current engine in the car is a true LS6 4-speed block that is date coded and stamped to look exactly as the original would. Documented LS6 Convertibles have recently sold for $250,000. plus. This car can be bought for considerably less.

We did not do the resto so I can not answer as to why they put on aftermarket exhaust. Shifters are quite often changed to Hurst from Muncie.

I WONDER HOW THE BLOCK IS STAMPED EXACTLY LIKE THE ORIGINAL IF THEY HAVE NO PROTECTOPLATE TO SHOW WHAT THE ORIGINAL STAMP WAS ANYWAY. THEY SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES FOR THAT WHOLE STORY! I KNOW OTHER PEOPLE WHO HAS EMAILED THEM ALSO AND GOT THE SAME ANSWER! THE GUY WHO THEY SAID HAD THE CAR FOR 30 YEARS IS FALSE AND HE DID NOT EVEN BUILD THE CAR!!! I DONT GET IT! THIS ONES GOING TO GET VERY INTERESTING I GUESS.

I hate it when I see clone stuff being passed off as original. In the sub-heading he says "True 1970 LS6 Convertible". Later on he says "When this 1970 LS6 was new...". I would interpret those 2 statements as this being a factory original car. He sure likes to use the words "durability" and "reliability". For somebody that didn't restore the car he sure knows a lot of details. Maybe it wasn't David Gilmore the Corvette guy that restored it. Maybe instead it was David Gilmore of Pink Floyd!

"We have ended the EBAY auction on our 1970 CHEVELLE LS6 CONVERTIBLE because this morning, SATURDAY, JULY 17, 2004, we had a conversation with one of the former owners and he furnished us some verbal information contrary to what has been told to us before. At this point in time, with all present inputs considered, it seems indeterminable as to wether this is a true original LS6. or an outstandinly dated coded replica. That being the case, we believe it to be incorrect to call it a true LS6 at this time, and have therefore ended the auction to insure that all parties interested in the purchase of this vehicle have all the same available information. Thank you each for your comments and assistance!"

Thanks Jason, it sounds like the right thing to do. It's a beautiful car in the pictures you posted on eBay.
