The air cleaner decal is an aftermarket, but era-correct item. You could buy these from speed shops and through parts catalogs with various engine IDs and HP ratings. I think these decals were discussed here awhile back.

JOE,I KNOW YOU KNOW YOUR CARS,BUT I DISSAGREE WITH YOUR POST ON THE AFTERMARKET DECAL. I DONT KNOW THE WHOLE DEAL ON THAT DECAL BUT WHAT I DO KNOW IS MY FRIEND JIM BOUGHT A NEW 69 L78 CAR AND STILL HAS IT,AND IT HAS THAT DECAL ON IT AND HE TOLD ME IT WAS THE ONE ON THERE WHEN HE GOT THE CAR!! AND I HAVE A 68 AIR CLEANER OFF A LOW MILEAGE SURVIVOR CAR THAT HAS THE DECAL ON IT TOO!! BUT MINE SAYS 325-HP! AND THERES NO EVIDENCE THERE WAS EVER CROSS FLAGS ON IT. I WISH WE COULD GET TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS. I THOUGHT IT HAD TO DO WITH WHERE IT WAS BUILT AT. RESPECTFULLY YOURS DON.

One thought I have may be that sometimes cars were delivered to the dealerships without any engine size/HP decals on the air cleaner lids... as witnessed by many original cars, including the blue Yenko I recently posted pics of. I have a vintage mailout sent out by Chevrolet to their dealers, addressing the issue of dealers requesting replacement decals for cars during reconditioning, etc. and Chevrolet provides a brochure for an outside vendor who specializes in these "reproduction" factory-style decals. My thoughts are, perhaps dealerships used these aftermarket sources to add decals to cars that may have come in without any, in order to "dress-up" the engine and help the unknowledgeable salesmen and customers know what they were looking at when they raised the hoods... just a thought, as i still do not believe the decal in question was ever produced or installed by Chevrolet, but was indeed made during the same timeframe when these cars were new. I will attempt to post pics of the letter from Chevrolet, and the catalog... while the decal we are talking about is not shown, it proves there were outside sources for original style decals, even back then. A neat piece of memorabilia too! (click the link below)

Here is the front of the brochure from the outside vendor that reproduced decals and was endorsed by Chevrolet in the above letter to the dealership.

here's another page of the same brochure. I would bet those rectangular decals came from this place or one like it.

That is what I figured in the decal, but why take off the original and replace it with that one? Kinda strange. Its a 7000 RPM tach that redlines at 5500. Now for the seats.
