Excellent point Charlie. The dealer I bought my 67 RS from had a survivor 68 SS-RS 396 Convertible that sold days before I called on my RS. The seller just wanted to get rid of it and move on. At the time it wasn't even running, but the buyer had it running within hours of towing it home. If only I had called a week earlier, I'd have that car today. Shoulda, woulda, coulda.

Btw, the guy who owned my 67 RS, also had a super clean 96 Mustang Cobra. He traded them both in to the same dealer and went and bought an Acura SUV. I know he could've got much more than he did if he sold them on his own, but he just didn't want to deal with the tire kickers.

Charlie, Point well taken. While I was taking the 24 hours to sleep on it, the dealer upped his offer and the car was gone, sweet and simple done and over with. I guess you answered my question as to why this happens. Plus the dealer doesn't care about the stuff I was loosing sleep over.

The dealers have the cash available at a moments notice and it's not as big of a risk for them to make a purchase as it is for a private individual. Plus, having the cash to offer immediately will allow a dealer to purchase a car at a good chunk off the asking price. But if there were no classic car dealers at all, most of these cars wouldn't be worth much at all because the average Joe just can't come up with the money. The dealers help the sellers by buying the car and getting him out of the jam. Then they can help the buyer who can only purchase by getting a loan. It always bugs me to see some of these cars sitting at dealers for over inlfated prices, but without them most of these cars would never even be restored. That's my take on it, hope I didn't ruffle any feathers.

Alot of the time you will also see a high price at a Dealer because someone will want to trade their car in and it is easier to take the car in trade than to tell the buyer that his pride and joy trade is not worth what he thinks it is. Then the buyer can explain to his spouse how much he got for old blue and what a great deal it was.

Bear in mind dealers are much more "visible" than private collectors. If you've had a car for a long time and think about selling it (especially if your not "in" the hobby), it is very easy to jump on the web or see an ad, call a dealer and sell it. No muss, no fuss. This is how many one owner, original cars come on the market.

I prefer not to buy from a dealer, but they certainly have their place and there are some good ones. They are in business to make money and as long as they do so honestly, they can benefit the hobby by bringing that low mile, original car out in the open for us to have a shot at. I am a firm believer the value of any item is what the buyer and seller strike a deal on. Of course, you and I might not agree, but that IS the value to those two at that moment!

JeffH:

Don't ever worry about ruffling my feathers. You make some good points. Since I consider myself to be in the average joe category, I can add a comment about financing. If you don't have the cash and feel you must use a dealer because you need finance help that's not entirely true. There are some on line loan people who have very competitive rates, and some who will even give you a blank check loan to go shopping with. So you can buy a car privately and get a loan.

And to Charlie, here's another reason to sell directly to a dealer. A dealer doesn't hire a third party to appraise and evaluate the car prior to purchasing it. If I ever sell another car, I can honestly say I don't know if I would be willing to subject myself and the car to this type of review. It's probably easier just to take a few dollars less from a dealer and be done with it.

Have I learned anything from this? Yeah probably. I think prior to this discussion I would have thought that you should just stay away from dealers. I now think that I was wrong in that assumption. I guess you could find a good car anyplace, and since they are so hard to find, I guess you should consider every source.
