No easy way to get owner history through the Cal DMV. Best way is to trace through service receipts, if you have them. Good luck.

California cars get new plates all the time. Jason [/ QUOTE ] <font color="blue"> I've always heard that the plates stayed with a car during its entire history in California. Nevertheless, this blue plate is original to the car.</font>

California Cars keep the same plates unless they get Personalized plates or if they have not been Registered for 4+ Years and fall off the Computer Database.

I was hoping one of you Cal. guys would chime in on this...Charley I know the blues were a mid year introduction and the blues kind of filtered in with the blacks...do the plates still stay with the cars in Cal...even today ? What came after the blue plate and when was it introduced.

If the Dealer is licensed with the DMV, they could run what is called a KSR. This is a direct link to the DMV that we use all the time but they are very strict on what we can do with that information. We would use it for when somebody trades in a car and we need to verify information about the car. We can verify that the person is the registered owner of the car, if the tags are current (additional fees would be due) or if it has a salvage title.

Attempting to find any paperwork for my 68 Van Nuys built Z28, Sacramento DMV told me the following:
1. No info available for cars older then 6 years to the general public. 2. Expired tag numbers mean nothing. 3. Only way to trace older cars is thru court litigatetion involving a laywer or judge. (Example: A contested estate, will or trust) I had a NC State Trooper run the VIN number for me and he came up with the same thing. Other states are more liberal with their records. For example, I got complete history on my 82 Z28 from the NC DMV, no questions asked for free.
