Mirror Disassembly Made Easy

Posted By: jeff68 <[email protected]>

I recently disassembled the standard LH mirror on my 68 to replace the glass and have the components re-chromed. I had heard that the only way to remove the glass was to either break it (which I couldn't bring myself to do on an original date coded mirror)or try boiling it in water which often results in breakage. Here's what I did: I held the assembly in a soft-jawed vise with the glass facing up. I then filled the 'cup' formed by the mirror head with laquer thinner, covered it to prevent evaporation, and let it sit for 12 hours. When I came back, the mirror lifted right out. I then removed the base from the head by applying a light, even heat with the propane torch to the top of the base. This breaks down the retaining compound used to hold the ball part of the ball joint into the base. If you pull straight out on the ball/head assembly after sufficiently heated, it will come right out.

I didn't find any info of this type already posted, so I thought everybody might be interested.
