Joe,
My research shows that the rear ends were painted as an assembly with the backing plates and drums installed. On some survivor cars I have seen, some drums were painted almost entirely black while others had overspray around the back edge. The backing plates were natural on the inside. I believe the lines and junction block were installed after they were painted.

On '70 Chevelles, most rearends were painted with the exception of Van Nuys cars. I have seen many of these with an all natural (not gray painted) rearends. JMO

My Fremont 66 SS has all natural rear, had no black other than dirt and grime pre-resto., but that may only go to the Calif. aspect...no rush to undercoat and wasn't on the dealer lot but a day or so.

Not seen very well in that particular photo, but it is Actually a factory tracking/sequence number...it is also on my TRIM TAG...it was a "partial" seen and replicated at time of resto.

Interesting, I was curious because I found a big, yellow crayon '36' written under the center section of the rear on my car, and a white 'x' by the pinion yoke. The Novas received a frame sequence number written in white on the engine cradle, it also corresponds to the the broadcast sheet per NNN.
Thx,
