Wow I can't beleive this came up.Its a very old mechanics secret whereby large pine branches are bashed continuously into the chamber area of the head until smooth and round.Similar procedure to oaking but different results.

If memory serves me correctly (I hope I'm right) If a valve guide has a nasty habit of coming loose, they would drill the side of the head into the guide and put in a pin to keep it there.

Pete,
I have never seen a pinned guide(?) but have seen pinned Rocker arm stud bosses or towers so that the High Tension springs did not pull the pressed rocker arm stud out of the head. This was very common on mild race small block applications were screw in studs were not used. I thought that all HiPo Big Blocks had screw in Studs. |
