OK, I have been kinda waiting to share this story but can't wait any longer...
I went to high school in Waco, Texas (class of 1970) and I remember distinctly an upper classman (his brother was a class of '70 also) who was driving a hugger orange Camaro with 427 and no markings, a very plain looking car (sound familiar?). I remember this car very well cause I was driving a 68 Charger (383 4BBL) and got smoked! I asked to see his motor and remember him opening the hood and seeing this 427 wedged in. This car was the fastest thing on four wheels in Waco at this time and the car was very well known and feared! To get to the point, I know the guys name and I am positive that I can get in touch with him or his brother as my old high school is very active in the reunion thing. I don't know whether they have any records on the car but I am sure I can get some info as to what happened to it after they sold it. the question is does anyone know if there was any COPO Camaros sold new in this area of Texas? I know this car was NEW at this time. Might be fun to research this if anyone is interested...

I was stationed at Fort Hood off and on during the 1966-69 time period. I had purchased a new 67 GTO and used it as my transportation while down there. When I was getting ready to get out in spring 69, I thought of buying a new car and looked around the area at new muscle cars. I remember going to a Chevy dealer, either in Belton or Temple, that had a red 427 Camaro. I didn't know that it was, what is known as a COPO, until years later. I remember telling people about the car over the years and was told I was nuts, as GM never built such a critter. Always thought about that car and one day stumbled onto one and now own it. I don't remember the name of the dealer, but might if I heard it again. I don't think Temple/Belton is too far from Waco, so there was a dealer in that part of Texas that was selling COPO cars. Don't remember what the price was, but obviously too much at the time. I sold my gold GTO to my company clerk from New Jersey, bought a VW and went back to college. Fond memories of ripping up Central Texas during those years. Vern Bauer |

Temple is 35 miles south of Waco on I35, as far as I know I still hold the unofficial record for that 35 miles. I am surprised (somewhat) that there hasn't been more replies to this thread except I realize that most of these guys are from the midwest. I just thought that there wasn't that many of these COPO's and maybe someone would know something... This car had to be a COPO 'cause I know it was a NEW car with a 427.

The Chevrolet dealer in Temple, TX in the 60's was Steakley Chevrolet. I purchased a 64' Corvette from the original owner back in 1998. It had the window sticker with this delaers name on it.

That is too cool, I want to say that Steakley was the Chevy dealer in Waco also but I will have to check on it.
