Mike, Back in the 80's there were some magazine articles doubting the COPO Chevelle ever was built. I have in my notebook that a guy by the name of D. C. Bulna wrote in to the magazine stating that he worked at Malcolm Konner Chevrolet in Paramus, NJ. from 1966 to 1970. He remembered that Konner's received a delivery of five 427/425 hp Chevelles from the factory. One TH400 and four 4sp cars. He also stated that all five sold by the end of the week for about $3500.00.

JoeC:
You wouldn't to have his phone#, would you? I'm pretty sure Mr. Stubbs isn't the original owner, but this is the last known owner. Copo Connection, stated that there were only two dealers, near him. N.J. DMV, only kept record for 10 years, and being this car was last registerd in 1973, they couldn't help. I'll keep checking, so far, nothing uncoverd.

Mike - I found a web site for Malcolm Konner Dodge in NJ. It appears to be the same family. I also found this on the web site "In 1986, as a tribute to Malcolm Konner's dedication and influence, Chevrolet Motor Division manufactured 50 special "MALCOLM KONNER COMMEMORATIVE EDITION" Corvettes."

Just last night, I hit the jackpot myself.

Using a name I pulled off a photocopy of a Polaroid of the P-O-P for my 67 Yenko, I contacted the original owner on the first attempt. As in turns out, the original owner lives 3-4 miles from the address listed on the P-O-P, near Madison WI. His name (Gregg spelled with two g's) made it easy to find him in the telephone listings. Total research time: about 30 minutes.

What a blast! Prior to this phone call, I don't think we knew anything about the car before 1990.

I got to confirm what kind of badging was used on the car (no YSC emblems, only the 427 badge on the fenders like in the Span Inc photo -- plus something on the hood he can't quite remember), the correct spare (Charley, you might be getting your SpaceSaver back ), how fast it ran (low 11's with slicks), and more. He promised to try to find some original photos which, unfortunately, his ex might have. Been there, done that.

So now I want to trace it forward from the original owner. He sold it a couple of years later to a local mechanic/racer who drag raced out of Union Grove in the early 70's. His nickname was "Coke Bottles" because of the thick glasses. Any of you 'old guys' remember who this might be?

I'm thinking maybe it would be nice to reunite the original owner with the car at the SuperCar reunion, and maybe see if it still runs as hard as it used to. That'll give the trailer queens a conniption fit, don't you think?

Some of the posts indicate that titles searches were done in NJ. It is my understanding that NJ will not perform a title search from a VIN.

If I am wrong please let me know how to have one done.
Thanks

MikeA:
When Ed tried to find all prevous owner, to my COPO. NJ DMV, sent the money back, and stated that they only keeped records for 10 years. Being that my car was last registerd in 1973, and plates weren't keeped on it, they had No record of this car.

We have called Mr. Thomas A. Stubbs, but got an answering machine. So, as soon as we get in touch with the first gentleman, we will try the others, given to me.

regards, MIKE
