Hood Pins Location

I have seen recently some fiberglass hoods and the placement of the hood pins vary.

Is it personal preference or some logic behind this.

Recent " for sale ad" on the site for the prostock hood - has them way on the outside which had me wondering about placement.

Thoughts?

Since none were factory, I would suspect that it would be up to the installer....Joe

Here is my Z with a GM crossram hood and the hoodpin locations. The car was the late Warren Malkin's and he had Chris White install these parts he had saved over the years before he passed. I'm sure they are exactly where Chevrolet said to put them. I'm also pretty sure there are printed instructions somewhere.

My ‘67 hood pins were installed in the hood leveller location. Factory leveller nut in the rad support was drilled out to accommodate larger diameter hood pins. Early fiberglass hoods were pretty weak down the center. So, you’ll often see the hood pins moved inboard quite a bit.

I took off the fender braces and used those holes for my hood pins. It puts them closer to the center and I believe it spreads the load more evenly. It's been like this for 30 years and several 125 MPH passes with no problems.

If a hood already has the pin holes in it then one doesn’t have the option to relocate them unless the hood holes are filled then new fiberglass work, paint and etc..
I agree totally with Freddie about placing them more inboard to distribute the wind load that happens when driving the car. My pins are located outboard of the the hood and I’ve just recently had to do some fiberglass repair on the front cross brace of the hood. I caught the crack developing in the brace before it caused damage to the painted surface.My Harwood Stinger hood takes a beating driving at 60 MPH moving up n down. It’s very lightweight and only weighs approximately 20 lbs..
If one has the option to place new hood holes then go with Freddie’s method. But if it’s a trailer queen all this makes no difference just place them to whatever suits your fancy.

Good info and thanks for the pics. If the hood has a provision for the hood latch then would the outboard be
the better solution?

I see in Charlie pic his crossram hood utilizes the hood latch and catch mechanism.

I think they look best when symmetrically placed 4-5" from the corners.
I had a '72 Camaro and they were place in the valleys of the L88 hood.
FWIW, I guess it's just the camera angle and appear to be on the upper header panel but they weren't.
