There’s always the “rope trick” where you bring the piston to TDC, remove the spark plug & start stuffing rope into the plug hole. You will know when enough is enough. This will stop the nightmare of a valve from dropping into the cylinder! So simple a caveman can do it!

We use the hose with regulator.
Probably 40 psi but it is not critical. If not familiar with doing this taking fan belt off would be a good safety precaution. |

I do it like Dave G in post 6. You’re changing all the seals so let the engine rotate freely. The compressed air will push the piston to BDC, and then replace the seals, go back to TDC 1, set your valves.

I'm guessing that if you have enough oil getting into the cylinders to foul the plugs then you may need more than new valve seals.

I had the exact same situation with my former 69 SS396 Post Sedan. Had the valve seals replaced and it was fine afterwards.
