It must have been nice back in the day to go buy you a fire breathing big block and don't even care about the gas mileage because it was only 33 cents a gallon.

It's all relative.
I was pumping gas in 1969. If we were 24.9˘ and the Sinclair station across the street was 26.9˘ there would be a line down the street waiting to save that 2˘/gal. The Sinclair attendant would be in a lawn chair, working on his tan. Lots of VWs around in those days. As for me, I probably grossed $14 for my 8-hour shift. Much better than my 1st job at a drive-in, where I grossed $8.80 for an 8-hour shift. The minimum wage in 1969 was $1.60/hr. In 2025 dollars, $14.22. I have no idea why younger people think life was so much easier in the '60s.

Today, it takes two average incomes per household just to make ends meet. Rents are as high as a mortgage payment now, and back then it didn't take 72 months to pay off a new vehicle. There's whole lot of examples as to why it was easier in the 60s.

Just look at this chart below. In 1960 a house cost about 2 times the average yearly income.
In 2010, a house cost 4.5 times the average yearly income. And you can bet in 2025, those figures are even more depressing because home values have doubled in recent years but incomes have not. (Sorry about the misaligned columns, I have them correct in the reply box but it changes when it posts) Year Median Home Value Median Rent Household Median Income 1950 $7,400 $42 $2,990 1960 $11,900 $71 $4,970 1970 $17,000 $108 $8,734 1980 $47,200 $243 $17,710 1990 $79,100 $447 $29,943 2000 $119,600 $602 $55,030 2010 $221,800 $901 $49,445

Using lies, damn lies, and statistics, the media has brainwashed the public into believing the American Dream is no longer.
Meanwhile, several of our friends' children and grandchildren did not buy into the doom and gloom. They got an education, found good jobs. They were careful with money and although still 20s and single [one income] bought modest homes on their own. Just like I did when I was 25, only I needed two jobs to make ends meet. A friends dad used to say "Forty hours is for getting by." I still have no idea why younger people think life was so much easier in the '60s. ‘In times like these it’s helpful to remember that there have always been times like these.’ (Paul Harvey)
