A member of a 1st generation Monte Carlo Facebook group asked about factory correct exhaust for his big block car. There was consensus about resonators being on '70-'72 big block Montes. Another member suggested a Gardner kit if he wanted correct exhaust, which I felt like was mostly true, but I definitely had a different style resonator and more oval muffler than what the Gardner kit includes (had Gardner on a '70 SS car years back). Still, Eric's kits are likely the most correct kits out there.
I shared some photos of a '72 402 low, low mileage survivor car I owned for several years and it had more of a canister-style resonator, versus the more tubular style that is more accepted as "correct." Has anyone else seen the style resonator I had on my Monte, and does anyone have any insight whether this style was plant specific, or when it was used? Thank you, Jeff Last edited by Tidmack; 01-20-2023 at 06:49 PM. |

I have the original resonators saved from my 1972 402 Chevelle, same as what you posted. Supposedly Gardner has reproduced them.
The restored blue 69 small block Chevelle at the entry area to the 2022 MCACN show had what appeared to be these reproduction canister type resonators installed. |

----A long time ago (early 80's) I found a 70 Monte, 402/4-speed with ridiculously low mileage (3,200, if memory serves). I vividly remember that it had the canister style resonator as I removed the exhaust from the mufflers back and installed NOS big block Chevelle SS pieces with correct exhaust tips just to go to the Car Craft Nationals that year. Took them off when we got back and replaced the original stuff......Bill S

I appreciate the input, guys. It's also terrific to know Eric has access to the cannister style resonators, too. Thanks!

My 70 bb monte. I bought the exhaust from Gardner. It’s a 69 Chevelle bb chambered exhaust with resonators and kept the factory manifolds to keep the noise down. The exhaust tips are factory rolled tips from 69 l78 taken off day 1 and kept wrapped up for 50 years.

----I put factory 69 Chevelle chambered exhaust on my 70 LS5 convert way back in the late 70's. Stock exhaust manifolds just as you have and it was a great mellow sound. Great minds think alike decades apart!....Bill S

The resonators really quiet it down. Manifolds and chambered are restrictive but I’m not going 150.
