One of the key features that made the BM program a financial success was selling the takeout 396-375 hp short block from the converted cars. These short blocks were sold through the Baldwin parts department. Joel himself discussed this at one of the SCR's that I attended.

The majority of BM cars pre 1970 were factory BB, but certainly some SB cars were converted, but those would be in the minority.
