Where I come from (Minnesota) we called them eelpout. It was not uncommon to catch these while Walleye fishing.

I never went fishing while living in Long Island, but I did do a lot of scuba diving. You need to dive on wrecks because the ocean floor in LI is nothing but sand.

One of the wrecks is almost gone. All that is left is the bottom of the ship. Maybe 1 or 2 feet above the sand. Lots of nooks and crannies where lobster like to hide.

And . . . also eelpout. The ones in LI have what looks like the head of a newborn baby on a long tail. Very un-nerving when looking for lobster and you come across one. Yuk!
