Basically this. And clickbait. And a slow news week. Stirring up emotions is what sells things. "If it bleeds it leads" is a standard news slogan. "Scary" is used many times during the evening news--it could be a drinking game: Every time a national news anchor or reporter says "scary" you down a shot. You'd be smashed in ten minutes.
