The ones we ran in the early 80’s were red.
I talked to the air lift rep at the trade show. He said the first air lift bags were made out of rubber. They then went to a polyurethane type of construction but was unsure of when that was. He thought that they changed to poly some time in the 60’s But this is just a educated guess

I have a set on my 67 GTO that the original owner installed in 69 to pull his trailer. They are your typical black air bags, nothing special looking and pretty comparable to what you can buy today.

I have a 64 GTO and a 70 GTO unrestored but raced from day one, or as the term is today, day 2 and both still have the Black Rubber Air Bags in them, I have a NOS set from the 80's and they are a orange/red color, hope that helps
