Default speedo cable clips

on the69 Camaros with stick shifts they used 2 clips 1 on the fire wall the other on the trans tunnel for the speedo cable my question is where these installed before or after the firewall and underside was painted

I've seen an original on a firewall that was painted black and a natural on the same cars underside. I'd like to know as well as I'm just about to put mine on too.

If installed before the firewall was painted, wouldn't the speedo cable be painted, too? I can't imagine that the clips would be installed before paint, and the cable installed at a later time.

The one you inspected, was the entire clip painted, or just the exposed surface? Was the cable painted?

Also worth noting the AIM shows 3 clips (M20/A9), but have only ever noted 2 used on unrestored cars.

Cannot say for sure and would suspect that cars firewall was touched up at one point as it wasn't a survivor, but it was never frame off restored either. I would suspect they were originally unpainted and installed after the firewall was sprayed. Never seen paint on a cable and don't think the clips went on until the cable was installed. I'm going to clear coat mine and install them unpainted.

A member PM'd me to suggest I clarify ^ this statement, saying he has seen several '67 and '68 cars (including one of his own) with all 3 clips as per the AIM.
As the original question was specifically regarding the '69 Camaro, my comment was also regarding that year only, and only related to my own personal observations. However I do recall that Chick observed the same clip usage (2 not 3) during restoration of his '68 Z/28.

All I've seen on 69's is 2 clips myself. I have heard of three being installed but never seen more than two?
