I think Mercury actually used the term back in the mid-late '50s. One of my "dumb moves" was NOT buying a '68 442 because it had a 2bbl. I knew exactly what is was, I just didn't feel like changing engines because it wasn't even close to being quick. Now, why was it a "dumb move" you ask? Because it was Black/Black and it was straighter than an Amish Preacher and $8500 about 15 years ago. Originally a black car; repainted and pretty good, but damn, was that a straight car.

The Mercury Turnpike Cruiser was available in 1957-58, but it was more of a gadget-laden chromesmobile rather than an engine package tuned for cruising and economy in mind.
