I used to be in the flat black camp, but Charlie has just about convinced me that it wasn't. Evidence on mine suggested it was originally flat, but it hadn't been taken care of near as well as these. Mine will be painted like the original one posted in this thread, but not because I'm convinced it was like that originally. Here are a couple of survivors.
The first pic is mine. I'm still torn because it looked the same under the trunk seal that had never been removed.
