Bought an 86 Silver Spirit a number of years ago. The tires looked absolutely brand new, still had their pips on them (on the tread, not just the sidewalls). Took the car out for a trip from Anaheim to Ventura. The first tire came apart in about 30 miles. Put the "new" spare tire on and got back on the freeway. Second tire disintegrated in the next 15 miles (although I still had air!!--strange). Took the next off ramp and went to the closest tire store. Put on 5 new Michelins.
Never, never drive freeway speeds on really old tires (IMHO). I sure learned my lesson--fortunately without injury or damage--except to the pocketbook! Rick
