Non-turbo "Grand National" from 1986. I think the 1987-1989 3.8 turbo cars are the benchmark cars of the 1980's. Funny back then, the turbo 6 was a bit of counter culture idea in muscle car genre but with so many successful turbo cars after the GN- the ideology has shifted. In my mind, the public perception of what it is like to own a turbo car shifted- largely in part to the refinement of the 3.8 SFI turbo cars. |

Oldsmobile had to explain it in the brochures. This was way before the Buick, its the Buick Turbo's grandaddy ![]()

Good luck with the GN.You'll have a lot of fun.I had my own shop for 25 years and all we did were Turbo Buicks.Make sure who ever works on the car knows GNs.I had many GM dealers send me a GN that their class A mechanics couldn't figure out.A good source for parts is Kirban Performance. To start, get his Boost Regulator Vacuum Hose.I replaced many a head gasket because this hose got brittle and cracked or fell off.Next get their body bushing kit.You won't believe the difference in the ride.
With just a few inexpensive parts you can get the car into the low 12s and still get 25MPG. some of the best street racing memories I have were the mid 80s.5.0 Mustangs, IROCs and GN's, not incredibly fast, but tons of fun and all pretty evenly matched. Had a 88 5.0 LX stripper and still can hear the GNs turbo spooling up against the brake waiting for the light to change. Good times and good luck with car
