The Items unveiled are the actual tools used to stamp, correct and repair the VIN derivative on engine blocks originally installed at Norwood Assembly Plant.

I plan to place them on public display again sometime in the future.

As of today the display case was returned to safe storage in a local bank vault.

I travelled a loooonng way from Newfoundland, Canada, so I am glad I got to see other friends and a couple of collections passing through New York while I was there. Because if I just travelled for this show, I would have been bitterly disappointed. I couldn't even find the proper exhaust gasket (Mr. Gasket Ultra Seal #5912) while there. Many of the cars in the buildings were pretty bland...the separate brands have shows that are awesome, e.g. Trans Am Nationals, GTOAA, so why go to an all-brand event? I guess that's the thinking anyways. Time to re-boot, or kill it. It is not an event worthy of Carlisle.

Yes the weather forecast was known days in advance. Many car owners and vendors planned accordingly. SLS was fantastic as always....

Neat. Any idea how old the items were?

I am told the the Gang Stamper was a GM Spec Gang stamper supplied under a contract with the primary stamp supplier in the mid 1960's It is a special alloy designed to resist deformation.

I am told that the Repair stamper was made in the tooling department around 1969 as a corrective action to an audit finding when engines were not properly stamped. With the alternator now in the way it was taking too long to re stamp engines in a post production configuration so the repair stamper was invented to speed the process along which saved the alternator removal steps. It is not a special hardened alloy and it's head is mushroomed considerably.

Interesting. The Norwood partial vin stamps before 67 were small and stamped right on the front edge of the pad. Definitely easier to read the gang stamp in 67.

After the switch to the area by the filter in 69 VIN verification for audit was conducted in the pit.

When the motor line missed one and it was caught-they used the front edge of the pad out in the repair lot with the repair bar and the stamps in a taped gang configuration-it was faster than hand stamping and still used an approved location.

I live ~25 miles from the fairgrounds. I really wanted to go up on Saturday, but with the weather being as bad as it was, I decided it wouldn't be much fun to slop around in the mud. Spent the day tinkering with the Chevy II in the garage instead. Maybe next year.
