Nope, that was a nothing done, mostly all GM OEM parts (block, crank, rods, TRW "replacement standard bore" pistons, 840 heads, and even GM pushords for a few hits) that were reworked. Funny you mention Nitrous. The car DID gave 2 plates on it from my buddy's tunnel rammed SB Vega. They were set to 150 each and was loaded ready to go. I had them flipped so one plate had Nitrous feed from the from, other plate feed from the rear. Thought that might cancel out the 2 plates. Never needed them on the street, and NOTHING ran with this car. We did a 351 Cleveland for another guy who went 10.70's on motor and 9.70's on a 125 hit. But since we did the motor, we never got a chance to run with it. When the track came to kick me out, I said "really, the cars not that fast. Something must have tripped the light. Let me make 1 more hit, if it's a 10 ANYTHING, I will leave no questions"? They said NO!! I was going to hit the Nitrous and run it out the back door IF the car ran and did not blow up. FYI the 351 Cleveland, well 356 being .030 over was also MOST OEM Ford parts, 4V heads, OEM block and crank, SB Chevy 6" rod. We ran this motor in a B/D back in the early '90's. That motor with the tunnel ram ran 7.80's for 3+ years. We ended up building the same style motor with ome better parts, C302 B heads and sheetmetal intake. Set the B/D record with a 7.4?. Never seen a "pretty much" stock built BB Chevy in a full bodied nova run that fast! Real good times!
That is pretty close to NHRA C/S times today. |

Actually, the bottom end was together for about 12 years before we took the motor apart. I know the last 4 owners of the car. The car was just plain FAST! That motor, before we dug into it, in my Nova with M-21 and 4.88 and 9 X 29.5 slick raced a 340 Arrow with slick and Nitrous. That was a SOLID low 12 second Arrow, Many 12.20's. But the Nova driver only beat him by a fender. I was at the finish line checking that night in the mid 1980's. BUT the Nova miss shifted 4 out the 3 gear changes (missed 3rd TWICE) due to the driver having MS.
So when I got serious about the car, We took it apart, ball-hones the bores, ARP bolts in the 7/16 rods (my buddy prep'ed like his 9500 RPM Clevelands) used the OEM steel crank and TRW factory replacements. We just added a set of C& A file fits and rod and main bearings. Didn't even balance it. Fel Pro "BLUE" head gaskets in case we turned on the Nitrous. Cam was a 660 Comp roller, Herbert "cheapy" lifters and OEM pushrods (then went south FIRST track pass). 840 heads that were homeported, 2.19 1.88 Ti valves we had around the shop form some Cleveland experiments, Ti locks and retains from the race 351 motor's, along with the K-Motion K-1000H springs, and 1.73 FORD rockers. Holley Strip Dom intake was on the motor, but we ported it, and sent out the Holley 800 for reworking. Launch at 6000 shifting at 7800.
