For a Pontiac specifically (or any nameplate, actually) it depends on the final assembly location, engine type or option, and vehicle model. High production volume = sooner; anything unusual = longer.

All Pontiac engines were cast, machined and assembled in Pontiac Michigan. If the vehicle was also built in Pontiac then there is essentially no transport time. The engine block date code on my September of 1964 Pontiac Michigan built '65 GTO precedes the car's final assembly date by 9 days. Seven days is not unheard of for a similar situation.

On the other hand, if you have an unusual engine for a vehicle built at a remote location (like Norwood or Van Nuys) there are cases of it being as high as 6 months, while the correct materials are gathered.

In view of all this the standard textbook answer is anywhere between 2 and 12 weeks - ish, for most regular production scenarios.
