Default Re: Factory Ratcheting auto shifter for 2nd gen?

Hot Rod had it in there magazine 20 years ago as a cheap part to build a budget drag car. I got to use one last year when a friend bought a cool 80 Z28 in factory copper. I have since removed it for a B&M shifter. We boxed everything nice and put it in storage.

This is the first time I've ever seen this too. Very cool.

Steve, do you know if all SD's received this shifter? My cousin has a 74 SD and I'm wondering if he has it.

Kurt, yes, all SD-455 cars had them. I posted this on the last page.

Lots of GTO's and Firebirds were &quot;relieved&quot; of their ratcheting shifters throughout the 1980's and 1990's when street and drag racers realized how useful (and cheap) they were over an aftermarket Hurst shifter. Many owners of original Pontiacs back then never even knew they had a ratcheting shifter until someone showed them. </div></div>

These were first used on the '69 Grand Prix's as well... like the previous years Hurst auto shifter that was standard on the '67 &amp; '68 GTO, the GP's even had the 1-2-3 cast into the right side console plate to remind you of this feature.

This shifter was the standard automatic shifter in all Camaro's with a console starting in 1973. I am not sure when but I think they dropped the ratcheting function sometime late in the the 2nd Generation production run.
