For a Chevelle, the rule of thumb is divide the width of the wheel in half then add a half inch.
So,to fit correctly, a 8-1/2" wheel would need have a 4-3/4" backspacing. I have 15X8 Corvette rally wheels on my '69 Chevelle and they have a 4" backspacing....and it really should be 4-1/2"....but they do fit. Hope that helps, Kurt
