In my opinion, sideways carbs back then just were not done (that I saw anyway) on street cars. Most kids were on a budget and they just bolted everything together as it came, without a lot of science and expensive linkage. To me, sideways carbs were the "thing" the racers did, and they spent a LOT of money on a LOT of things to be competitive.

That's just the way I remember it (and did it myself)
