the high bidder tried to get me to end the auction early (I know, no one has ever heard of or tried using that tactic before ...) His early offer was less than half of the winning bid ... thanks

I don't mind his telling us this. It points out that sometimes it is better to let the auction run versus ending early. I was the under bidder on the cannister but was at a football game when it ended.
