A lot has been written about the colors of the finished grilles, but I haven't seen anything about different colors of the base material. </div></div>
Well, crap. One of the problems with the internet is that typed words don't always convey the spirit in which they are intended. I was not the least bit offended. Calling myself a certified non expert was only meant to convey acknowledgement of those on this board with considerable more expertise to me. Sorry if I came across as being whiney.

When I purchased a number of 3957062 black grills in the early 80's I believe the silver (3957044) was already discontinued- that is why I am confused about what I have and asked the question about the base material. At that same time 2 of the other grills I still have are marked VIP(on the box) which is what a number of the parts I have received are marked before they are discontiued as well as that designation was used for rush shipment which mine were not
I will take some pictures and post in the next few days, as I have stated earlier there are no marks or indications that it was ever bolted up or masked and sprayed. I opened the sealed box sometime in early 2000 +/- a few years and put the grill aside still in the original box.- maybe a factory screw up? or someone purchased it- did a hell of a job painting it and returned it? Thanks Fred
