Is this an original LS6 car? How did you manage to track down the motor so far away? Congrats on the car.

I very recently acquired a 1970 Chevelle as well. True Chevelle, big block, disc brake car. 100% original sheetmetal with just the nose missing. Car has lived its entire life in the high desert of Washington state and therefore has never seen any rust.

I am going to try and determine what motor was originally in the car - whether it be a 396, 454 LS5 or (highly doubt) 454 LS6.

Don't forget to include the LS-3 402/330HP as well.

Yes, very true. I need to get time to try and look for a build sheet. I doubt there is one still there.

Without a build sheet - any other hints to look for to determine original motor?

If your trying o find out if it's a real LS6 does it have an M22 trans? What's the cowl tag and the rear end codes? I would go to Team Chevelles Forum and try and get these decoded in the tag forum.
