As a Canadian I've been billed for duty weeks later in the mail after paying in full what I was supposed to on items I've brought into Canada, not happily but certainly never the sellers fault..
The shipping co. or broker if one was used should coordinate the collection of all fees by those responsible and not try to stick the shipper/seller w/ any mistakes made by them..
Make them show you specifically where your responsibility for this is noted on anything you agreed to also be sure to remind them it was you who chose to employ their firm and will not in the future if this is how they operate..
