Thanks for the compliment on the car. It is a pretty car.
You folks might find this interesting: Before the 1LE became available, GM of Canada Motorsports built a fleet of cars for the Player's Challenge series they were promoting. I'm quite sure those cars provided the seed for the 1LE cars that came later. I acquired one of those early Player's Challenge cars for magazine and book work. It came directly from GM of Canada. It was a lightly used 1986 Firebird T/A that saw parade duty for the Player's Challenge series. The car was white with a grey cloth interior, and much like the later "official" 1LE cars, it was pretty basic. It ran great though. I drove that car from Oshawa, through the US Midwest and westward to my home in Western Canada. During the trip, the Wisconsin State Patrol became, uhm, interested in the top speed capabilities of the Firebird. I didn't go to jail, but I suppose I should have. I'm an ex-cop and we did have a rather lengthy discussion about the accuracy of VASCAR. . A day or so later, I ended up parking it part way in my driveway at home -- My wife and I arrived in a raging blizzard. It was a road trip and a half. To make a long story short, the car was eventually turned into a NHRA Super Stock GT car (and updated from 1986 trim to 1992 trim). My race partner campaigned the car. We had a very limited budget, although some racers accused us of big factory support: "Those guys have bow tie blocks stacked up like cordwood". I only wish. We had one 255 HP 350, one good Powerglide and one broken Powerglide and two torque converters. We eventually sold the car to pay off our slightly over extended credit cards (L-O-L). And the year after, it won the NHRA Super Stock World Championship. It was one of those cars that had soul. Wayne |

I am very aware of the 1LE packages, the ones that came out in 88 and continued through the new bodies. Not sure if the Players cars had the big brakes on the early years ...
My best man at my wedding was the chassis engineer for those cars (and is still a chassis engineer with GM) ... We drove to Florida from Detroit in the winter of 87 in a 1LE "prototype" and ran a SCCA race at the Sebring track ... the 4th gen 1LE's differences were the higher durometer suspension bushings, sway bar(s?), fuel tank baffle, alum prop shaft, DeCarbon shocks (soon replaced by Konis) and no a/c ... the brakes were the same as opposed to the Corvette front rotors that the 3rd gens had There were several 1LE's that a local dealer (Chapman Chevrolet) ordered and got stuck with ... no a/c in AZ??? lol

I'm a big fan of 80s muscle, if you couldn't tell by my screen name. Underappreciated, in my opinion. |

Thx. I guess the bit of irony is we painted that Super Stocker in almost the same blue as the ILE in the picture. Wayne |

Hi Jim.
The '86 I had was equipped with standard brakes. It was a neat car. Thanks for the further update on the suspension. Wayne |

Here's a few photos of a 1LE Canadian car that I saw last year, and is currently in Edmonton.
I think it's an 87, and has been restored to 'as raced' trim. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Thank you. That brings back fond memories!
As soon as the Blue 1LE gets here, I'll add some more photos (might be a few weeks, since a couple of the big trucking outfits here in Canada can't deliver until after Christmas -- although we're hoping to get a smaller operator to do the haul before then). BTW: That last photo definitely gives me garage envy Wayne |
