Bruce, that's a great foundation for a VERY strong street engine. Those '73-'74 454's have excellent potential with their #781 or #049 oval-port cylinder heads and are one of my favorite foundations for a great engine. Have a reputable shop put the larger 2.19/1.88 valves in the heads, punch the cylinders out .060 for a big 468 CID, keep the cast crank and 3/8 rods with ARP bolts, slide in a Comp Cams 288 Street Roller with a Performer RPM dual plane intake and 850 Holley and this thing will run 11.40's all day long in a decently prepared car. This a great combination that has been copied MANY times over because of it's brutal effectiveness. John Lingenfelter and I came up with this great combination while out on my pontoon boat a long time ago and it just flat out works. He was absolute genius in the pursuit of power.

Mark, cool info. I appreciate you sharing

The engine is going into my 16 year old nephew's Chevelle. I think we're going to keep it on the mild side for now...maybe just add a slightly better than stock cam

Pump gas...not too crazy, ya know?
