Default Re: Troy Thornton W-30 Ragtop at B-J Florida

Just saw this black 1970 442 W-30 4spd ragtop from Troy Thornton’s shop up for sale at B-J in April. The description does not match the photographs. People who have seen the car in person say it’s absolutely stunning. Now the big question is it real and documented?

Thanks RM

Thank you for the clarification…I knew the description didn’t jive with the photographs. Troy is a great guy and does absolutely beautiful work so I’m sure the 442 ragtop is stunning. This black & white W-30 ragtop in the photos looks very much like the car Level One Restoration did. But I remember speaking with Troy about a black & white 1970 4spd ragtop coming in for complete restoration. I hope to see the triple black 442 ragtop at the B-J auction.

Thanks again for the help! RM

Troy’s 442 ragtop did well at the B-J Fla. auction. The car was absolutely beautiful in person. It sold for around 115K with added commission. A good price for a standard non W-30 car. Another 1968 442-ragtop non W-30 sold for 128K with commission. Both cars were very nice in black & red. Overall the market for Olds was strong but down from a couple years ago. The market for Pontiac and Corvettes seems to have softened quite a bit but that is expected with state of economy. A very nice 1970 Judge RAIII coupe sold for around 46K and Vettes also appeared to be down. I had a good time and was able to get some golf in as well!

The black 70 was really sweet. The 68 442 was nice, but that's crazy money for a non-W car.

I know people with money over-pay at these events for cars that they really like, but the yellow 71 W30 got me.

You go to that level of restoration on a rare car like that and then blow it (my opinion) by drilling holes in the deck lid and installing the wing. Serious pet peeve seeing this on a rag top.

For that kind of money, it needs to be right........

It need to be an Olds Color, something close to original interior color and top.
That car started as #42 green, white top, white stripes and green interior. Why it was painted Corvette Yellow I will never know.

Guys…boy wasn’t that a shame what they did to that 1971 W-30 ragtop? Was that car originally Palm green or Lime green? The original Lime green with a white top would have looked fantastic minus the spoiler! It’s sad to see such a rare car defaced. The 1968 442 ragtop was nice but would have looked better with period correct redlines. That is JMHO though!

RM. Sure the Lime GReen Poly would also show up on the "least favorite color" thread for someone too, but I absolutely agree that car in Lime Green Poly with the white top would be so unique.

Did I mention that I didn't like the wing on the rag tops..........?

Sorry.

I got the GM canada data on that W30 ragtop years ago, I recall it being Palm Green.
Also Rick Debrule referred to the GM Canada docs and stated the car had all its original sheet metal, because convertibles were not driven much in the harsh Canadian winter. I will see if I can find the photos I had from 1995 and you will see how much original sheet metal was left, not much!
