I bought a few gallons from Chevrolet back in 2000 for $33 a gal.I know they stopped making it for sometime once they ran out of inventory, but heard they started mixing it again.
Contact Melrose T-Top international here in Cortland Il.They have,or once had the GM license to remix it.. http://melroset-tops.com/products/paint.html ..or call Classic Muscle in Salem N.C...1-800-722-4828. They show they have a 60% gloss reconditioning paint under #1050104 for $89.95 a gal.,which they may be getting directly from Melrose.Their not showing a pic. |

I had been using 1050104 for over 20 years. Used to buy it by the case. IMO it was the best stuff ever made. It covered in one coat, provided an excellent and accurate finish. It was perfect for "dipping" parts as was done by the factories. After recently running out of my old "stash" I purchased some of the "new" 1050104. It's NOT the same stuff. Its alot thinner, doesn't cover well, and produces "bubbles" when parts are dipped.

Take a look at the SEM Rustshield black...it has a nice satin finish, not too shiney, and it is very durable. You can brush it on a subframe and it smoothes out so nice there are no brush marks. They also offer a hardner/enhancer to add a little more sheen if needed....quality product from my experience.

I'm interested in this too. Somewhere, I have two paint formulas Jay Nixon gave me over twenty years ago, and they were pretty much perfect. One was for parts painted in enamel, the other for parts painted in lacquer. Obviously, the lacquer might be impossible to mix, but I don't know about the enamel. I'll look for the formulas.

Here are the two paint formulas from years ago:
"Nixon Eggshell black lacquer formula": PPG - Two quarts "mixing black" #386 - One quart "universal flattening agent" - One quart "mixing clear" #310 - Use PPG #DDL-16 quick dry thinner or DuPont #3608S thinner. Don't use a slow dry thinner. Stir the paint well - it will look very thin due to the clear when stirring. "Nixon GM frame enamel formula": PPG Delstar or Dupont Centari - Three quarts mixing black (sometimes called "strong black") - One quart flattening agent - Use PPG DTR601 quick dry reducer. The enamel has a different "luster" than the lacquer. The lacquer was used on the firewall, inner rad support and other engine compartment sheetmetal. Again, the above should be credited to Jay Nixon. Anyway a couple of decades ago, the above was the hot tip, and in my own mind, it looked perfect. Stuff has obviously changed since then, so take the above for what its worth. Hopefully some of you have some way more current and modern mixes (fingers crossed!). Wayne Scraba |
