The program is already out of money so I wouldn't worry too much.

This was a well thought out program that was supposed to last 4 months NOT 4 days. Can't wait for the healthcare plan...

I heard the dealers were afraid the goverment ran out of money but there still is money left. They sold 50,000 cars and the plan has a cap at 250,000 units

Funny how things can be looked at from a different viewpoint...this whole program was done at the expense of USED CAR DEALERS...

I'm a used car dealer...

First, have you ever looked at the list of 'eligible' trade ins? These are NOT 'new' car buyers...these are used car buyers CONVERTED into new car buyers..by this program.

So Used car dealerships LOSE 250,000 sales while NEW car dealers get these sales...the way the program is advertised by the new car dealer...it brings in thousands of possible buyers who THINK they will get 3500/4500 for their junk only to find out their car doesn't fit the guidlines...but once in the door, they are at the mercy of a new car salesman.

We used car dealer have NO PROBLEM with new car sales..it is from these sales that the 'trade-in' is garnered,[our inventory...but under this plan, the 250,000 cars are to be crushed, we should have gotten the majority of these car in trade ins to US...

So when John Q Public trades in his old Aerostar Van, he bought from me ten years ago,on new VW..it's on my back that VW [German company]makes money,a millionare car dealer makes money, and after all the years MY service department took care of this Aerostar ..he is lost to a dealer who has done NOTHING to 'earn' this customer, all backed by the government, [MY taxes] in a deal that's too good to pass up..

I lost at least two sales last week to this program...College costs me the same as Mister VW dealer, And need to but food on my table just as well...

[almost fell off my soap box...]

They did a news piece on a local guy that traded in his twenty year old benz on 15k sticker KIA.. after the gub-mint voucher, his credit union discount, dealer rebates he paid $5500 + T&L- or a third of window, not too shabby!

for 350.00 bucksand trade that in ? Will that fly?

Jim's used dealer angle is very interesting!.
Here in Canada we're still waiting and watching how things unfold in the US before we get anything similar...if it even happens at all?.

Here's some of the US eligibility details below..

Trade-in Vehicle
Is in drivable condition
Has been registered in your name and insured consistent with State law continuously for at least one year immediately prior to the date you trade in your vehicle under the Cash for Clunkers program
Was manufactured less than 25 years before the month you trade in your vehicle (for example, if you trade-in your vehicle any time in August 2009, your trade-in must have been manufactured in August 1984 or after); or, in the case of category 3 trucks, not later than model year 2001
Has a combined MPG of 18 or less (this does not apply to category 3 work trucks, i.e., very large pickup trucks and cargo vans)

New Vehicle
(Purchased or Leased)
Is new (i.e., legal title has not been transferred to anyone)
Has a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $45,000 or less prior to the addition of any options, features, taxes or destination charges

You asked for "thoughts?" and I provided mine. No political attack intended, just fact. I would say the program was not well thought out for the reasons you posted and others as well.
