The best paint to use would be a single stage enamel/urethane, and mix flattener/hardener/reducer with it. The amount of gloss can be changed depending on the amount of flattener you use. Depending on the brand, go by their mixing ratio's and add/subtract the amount of flattener you want, until you get what you're looking for.
