Ray- I appreciate that you didn't take it personal. I work in an industry where I have watched people loose jobs to outsourcing for 20 years so it kinda hits home to me. Others like your local bartender who have never experienced it may not have a clue but again it was just my opinion. Good luck with your outsourcing.

Kim, and Bud are correct. I agree. The other option is to subsidize American mfg. That's something that free mkt believers seem to resist. I agree with them, if the playing field is equal. Obviously with vast numbers of workers in China that work for very little, an equal playing field isn't going to happen.
There is a re awakening to the quality, and safety of American products. And a sense that we need to build, and manufacture our own products. Maybe if you market your product that way, people will still buy it even if it costs a little more.
I would have paid more for a fishing pole for my grand kids if I could have found one.
Good luck, and keep trying.

100% Correct---------I buy a fair amount of outdoor gear and when "available" I buy and even though that particular product might cost more ,it always..let me repeat that..it always outlast the Japan ..China..Taiwan..Bangladash..Korean..etc..made products twice as long. So really in the long run you wind up buying 2 to every 1 American made product.....
Short Story and then I'll get off my soap box...I bought an American made car cover for my car..now, it did cost more than the foreign made one but I told the seller the reason I was buying his car cover was because it was made in the U.S.A....He was so appreciative he took money off the cost...the bottom line is you can't beat the quaility of well made American products in the long run----the end .. oh yeah....very website Kim Howie

THANKS for that link Kim!

There's a company (on that list) that makes lures located here in the Detroit area. They have been in business for over 100 yrs!

Eppinger Manufacturing-"America's Fishing Lure"

Here's the "Old Street Scene"

It's been a few years since my history classes so forgive me if I err, but wasn't Atlanta [& the surrounding area] the hub for textiles at some point? And, does ayone else shudder to think what would have happened had we had *our current* manufacturing climate/base back in the early 1940s when WW2 came knocking? We were able to simply retool our factories *then*...but what if a similar situation arises *now*...we don't have anything to retool!?! We'd better hope China is fighting on our side should something happen, or else we're screwed!

On a related note...for those folks who are drawn to Chineese produced goods and the economic advantage they carry [regardless of quality] the market continues to grow, and can now carry your *frugality* into eternity...a couple of companies in the U.S. have now started pushing Chineese made caskets! The first year or so they were of noticably poor quality, and distribution was almost non-existent, but they've addressed and fixed a lot of the issues, and more and more funeral homes are getting on board. When a sales rep came by our offices, we told them "no thanks", but I wonder if the decision will be so cut & dry several years down the road, if more and more of our local competitors jump ship to the Chineese products?

You guys got some real good points. It is no longer a level playing field. As we push more and more to Socialism we are only catching up to the other countries that have been in that state for many years. Not really a free market capitalistic venue anymore. Most Govts have been backing there industry for years. I don't care if we don't tax our companies or if we even work for much more than $1.00 an hour we still can't compete very well. We have to have free trade with the countries that have the same or close to the same life style and programs we do. How were we so strong and profitable in the 50's,60's,70's and part of the eighties? We competed then, and the Unions were even stronger in those days. What happened? Its just like people selling musclecars, houses, antiques etc. Some people want to make a living and other people want to make a KILLIN! Know what Ray, I believe you already knew the answer to the question you were asking.

Maybe we need to remind China of the Marshall plan...think they'd reciprocate the help?

Darren, I haven't given up on having at least some of the product built here. I have a company named Pet Goods Mfg. no more than 20 miles up 400 (Buckhead to Dahlonaga). They could build and sell my product but they won't even talk to me!! The first time I chalked it up to incompetence. After two more tries I just said to hell with them. Maybe they consider me competition. Idiots. (Google Pet Goods Mfg. in Dahlonaga, GA.....just call them and ask what the hell their problem is!) Is this typical of American mfgs??

We have the second highest corp. tax in the world. And we could debate tariffs until the cows come home and never get anywhere. I have no problem with tax breaks (subsidy). If that just allowed the U.S. to be competitive it would bring in billions of dollars of revenue. Right now we are not even close.

I could have the product built 20 miles from my house but instead I have go half way around the world to have it built. Crazy.

Joe at the Parts Place in Illinois has everything made in China - it is the American way to clone rare cars!
