real 499 w deep lines and pretty deep stamp . Look at the first 2 1s, they are a lot longer than the others... REAL PIECE. I guess its possible to look into things way too much

OK - last post on this subject - Fred (L78fred) and I ran into a 499 distributor that had great 4s & 9s. It looked like it had been turned on a lathe though - like the re-stampers do. Turned out that the diameter was indeed undersize and there was very little "step" left where the distributor seats. I thought that it was real - Fred did not. In hindsight, I think that Fred was correct mainly because of uniform turning marks & the small diameter. Those unusual 4 and 9 stamps were "out there" at one time.
I've learned never to say never though. |
