Default NEGATIVE CABLE

My cousin has a 69 Malibu with a 350 engine. He recently purchased the correct spring ring type battery cables and discovered that the negative cable is about 6-8 inches too short to bolt to the thermostat housing like the assembly manual shows.. He has tried some other parts distributors and all the cables seem to be the same length. He is certain he does not have a big block cable. Those only bolt to the passenger side of the block..

He has since figured the most likely problem is the posts were reversed on the original batteries. On his current battery the negative top post is on the left side of the battery as your looking at the front of it... In lieu of changing the battery, does anyone have any ideas on what he can do to make the cable fit like it is supposed to??

Thanks... Rich
