NEGATIVE CABLE

My cousin has a 69 Malibu with a 350 engine. He recently purchased the correct spring ring type battery cables and discovered that the negative cable is about 6-8 inches too short to bolt to the thermostat housing like the assembly manual shows.. He has tried some other parts distributors and all the cables seem to be the same length. He is certain he does not have a big block cable. Those only bolt to the passenger side of the block..

He has since figured the most likely problem is the posts were reversed on the original batteries. On his current battery the negative top post is on the left side of the battery as your looking at the front of it... In lieu of changing the battery, does anyone have any ideas on what he can do to make the cable fit like it is supposed to??

Thanks... Rich

Rich,

I HAD THE SAME PITA Problem.....no one makes the correct correct size negative cable for a SBC

I MADE MY OWN I WAS ABLE TO FIND AT A LOCAL PARTS STORE....A LONG SPRING RING CABLE AND I CUT IT TO SIZE WITH A CORRECT END ON THE HOUSING. Got lucky for once.

Re: NEGATIVE CABLE

If someone wants to pursue this with American Autowire or whoever makes these, I can provide measurements;/part number from the original one on my Malibu. I wasn't aware that the repops were off for the SB Chevelles. The electrical aftermarket guys usually do a good job. This is surprising.

Great idea Phil... I just do not do that many SBC builds
If I do another in the future....I will definitely call upon you.

Rich....we just got lucky and the guy at the parts store pulled it off the shelf....said it was there for years. I could not tell you it`s application?

Re: NEGATIVE CABLE

The Small block Camaro negative cable I bought fits fine on my 69 Camaro, no issues.

Re: NEGATIVE CABLE

What's the original part # or the Part # stamped on the negative cable, length and gauge?

Re: NEGATIVE CABLE

I thought 69 s/b Camaro attached to the upper alternator bracket, and b/b attached directly to the block.
