I have a 170 distributor which appears to be a low mile take off, I would like to know what the purple paint marking means???? Also there appears to be a J on the Vacuum unit. What would this mean aswell??? Thanks

vacuum unit marking [/ QUOTE ] Are you sure that "J" is not a "4"...??? Many times the vacuum can was marked with the initial timing setting in crayon...4* is a common marking. I believe the purple paint is an inspection mark...other experts may chime in. wilma

According to Colvin, the paint stripe is to identify the distributor without having to read the number on it.

Great info...I checked our 1968 dated 170 and it has the purple paint mark....

from what i've seen and have herd most of the solid lifter cars had the purple marking on the dist
